You may remember that one of our speakers for Christmas Conference was Mo Leverett, a pastor who moved his family to the poorest district of New Orleans and started what became Desire Street Ministries (http://www.desirestreet.org/ – If you have a chance and aren’t familiar, you should really check out their website!). The perspective and experience that Mo and the others on his staff have gained challenged us tremendously at conference, and we think sharing in their mission to serve the poor and needy—both physically and spiritually—offers us a special opportunity to learn from what they’re doing.
After Hurricane Katrina last fall, like the rest of their area, Desire Street Ministries are left with only a big mess and lots of damage in the places where they had lived, worked, taught, discipled and played. Desire Street has arranged for Campus Outreach students from many different schools to spend whichever week they have off in New Orleans, working in their clean-up and reconstruction efforts. And since different schools have spring break different weeks, this arrangement results in a few, reasonably sized teams traveling to N.O. each week, every week this spring. So, we also hope—in addition to the great benefit we are sure to receive—that even in this short week we’ll be able to significantly contribute to their work of rebuilding and cleaning the Desire Street Academy and many of the homes in that area.
We have 14 people (counting Amber and myself) going from Georgia Tech, March 19th- March 25th, and students from Elon College will also share that time with us. We have to cover thes costs for transportation, room and board, but it's actually not that much. If you are interested in contributing to this effort, let us know.
We sincerely appreciate all the encouragement we constantly receive from all of you. Thank you for the prayers, phone calls, emails, letters and simply friendship that you share with us. God has richly blessed us!
